What are the client requirements?
What the client wants. Decisions they have made about their media product, timescale and target audience.
Why do you need to understand the client requirements?
If you don't creatively meet them your work wont be fit for purpose
What are the 3 purposes of the client requirements?
Provides the media developer with outline information and any constraints for the project
Make a clear statement of what needs to be produced but not how to produce it
Identify the intention for the product and what the client hopes to achieve
Name a key element of the client requirements
Type of product, purpose, target audience, client ethos, content, genre, style, theme, timescale, constraints, house style
What does the type of product entail? Give an example
the format required, eg. digital graphic, audio and video
What does the purpose entail?
whether the product should advertise, promote, entertain, educate, inform or influence
What does the target audience entail? Give an example
think about who, what, where and when. eg. age group, gender, interest and lifestyle
Give an example of the client ethos
quality, cost range, pricing, branding
What is the content?
depends on the type of product
What does the genre entail? Give an example
whether modern, retro, contemporary or specific to a style. eg. drama, horror, film noir, fashion, documentary
What does the style entail?
the visual or audio style relating to the content, genre and client ideas
What does the theme entail? Give and example
the central idea that everything connects back to
eg. family, environmental, pride, "who you are" and "what you stand for"
What does the timescale entail?
how long something will take to produce-related to when it is needed-either a milestone or a part in the final delivery
What do the constraints entail?
timescale and budget
What does the house style entail? Give an example
characteristics of a media product that are consistent with an organisation. eg. colour schemes, fonts, logos and their visual identity, etc.
What are the client brief formats?
commission, formal, informal, meeting/discussion, negotiated, written
What is commission?
a legal agreement that confirms what is needed, by whom and by when
What is a formal client brief format?
a detailed written brief
What is an informal client brief format?
a verbal conversation or a simple outline document
What is a meeting/discussion?
a verbal method of explaining what is wanted using an informal process. It may generate written conformation of what was agreed
What is a negotiated client brief format?
a two way discussion with the aim to reach an agreed solution
What is a written client brief format?
a formal document that confirms what is wanted and by when, it includes all relevant information
Can a client brief format take place more than once?
Yes, further information and clarification can be done to remove any problems, gather more detail and answer questions. This can be in the format of a discussion or an email aswell
