chap 5
Consciousness
Person’s subjective
experience of the world and the mind
Experience
ones ability to feel pain, pleasure,
hunger, anger, or fear
Agency
ones ability for self-control, planning, memory or thought
Full Consciousness
Consciousness in which you know and are able to report your mental state
Self-Consciousness
Distinct level of consciousness in which the person’s attention is drawn to the self as an object
Minimal Consciousness
Low-level kind of sensory awareness and responsiveness that occurs when the mind inputs sensations and may output behavior
Daydreaming
the act of refocusing attention from one's external surroundings to one's inner thoughts and imagination
Mental Control
Attempt to change conscious
states of mind
Thought Suppression
Conscious avoidance of
a thought
Ironic Processes of Mental Control
Mental processes that can producec ironic errors because monitoring
for
errors can itself produce them
The Rebound Effect of Thought Suppression
Tendency of a thought to return to consciousness with greater frequency following suppression
Dynamic Unconscious
Active system encompassing a lifetime of hidden memories, the
person’s deepest instincts and desires, and the
person’s inner
struggle to control these forces
Repression
Mental process that removes unacceptable thoughts and
memories
from consciousness
Cognitive Unconsciousness
Mental processes that give rise to a person’s thoughts, choices,
emotions, and behavior even though they
are not experienced by
the person.
Subliminal Stimuli
a thought or behavior that is influenced by stimuli that a person cannot consciously report perceiving; controversial Unconscious processing can help or hurt decision making.
Altered State of Consciousness
Forms of experience that depart from the normal subjective experience of the world and the mind
Beta Waves
high-frequency, low-amplitude brain waves that are commonly observed in an awaken state
Sleep Stage 1
lightest sleep – just starting to “nod off;” alpha waves
Sleep Stage 2
muscles more relaxed, breathing/heart rate slower, harder to awaken; theta waves
Sleep Stage 3
transitional stage from light to deep
sleep; delta waves
Sleep Stage 4
deepest sleep; almost pure delta wave activity
Slow-wave Sleep (Slow-wave deprivation)
Affects mood (irritable) , forgetful
Delta Waves
the slowest brain waves in humans, with a frequency of 1–3 Hz.
Stage 5/REM Sleep (REM deprivation)
relatively light sleep; alpha waves
When do we sleep less as people?
Sleep patterns tend to change as you age
Insomnia
Difficulty in falling asleep or staying asleep
Sleep Apnea
Person stops breathing for brief periods while asleep
Somnambulism (sleep walking)
Occurs when the person arises and walks around during sleep
Narcolepsy
Sudden sleep attacks occur in the middle of waking activities
Night Terrors
Abrupt awakenings with panic and intense emotional arousal
Dream Consciousness (Illogical)
the continuities of time, place, and person don't apply. You may find you are in one place and then another
Freud (Hidden Wishes)
Manifest content: Dream’s apparent topic or superficial
meaning
Latent content: Dream’s true underlying meaning
Activation Synthesis
Theory that dreams are produced when the brain attempts to make sense of activations that occur randomly during sleep
Depressants
Substances that reduce the
activity of the CNS
Stimulants
Substances that excite the CNS,
heightening arousal and activity levels
Narcotics
Highly addictive drugs
derived from opium that relieve pain
Hallucinogens
Drugs that alter sensation and perception and often cause visual and auditory hallucinations
Marijuana
Leaves and buds of the hemp plant that produces an intoxication that
is
mildly hallucinogenic
