1

Masseter

prime mover of jaw closure, elevates mandible.

2

orbicularis oris

closes lips, purses and protrudes lips (ie kissing or whistling)
encircles mouth

3

trapezius

extends head. raises, rotates, and retracts (adducts) scapula and stabilizes it.

4

deltoid

acting as a whole, prime mover of arm abduction.

5

triceps brachii

powerful forearm extensor

6

biceps brachii

flexion of elbow and supination of forearm

7

brachialis

major forearm flexor

8

brachioradialis

synergist in forearm extension

9

pectoralis major

prime mover of arm flexion; adducts, medially rotates arm

10

intercostals

external: pull ribs toward one another to elevate rib cage (inspiration)
internal: draw ribs together to depress rib cage (expiration)

11

rectus abdominis

flexes and rotates vertebral column

12

obliques

external: largest and most superficial of the 3 lateral muscles. flexes & rotates vertebral column, compresses abdominal wall.
internal: same functions as external

13

sartorius

flexes, abducts, and laterally rotates thigh; flexes knee

14

hamstrings group

extends thigh, flexes knee

15

gastrocnemius

(calf muscle) plantar flexes foot

16

soleus

(deep to gastrocnemius) plantar flexion, is an important muscle for locomotion

17

tibialis anterior

prime mover of dorsiflexion

18

latissimus dorsi

prime mover of arm extension; adducts and medially rotates arm

19

gluteus maximus

powerful thigh extensor, laterally rotates and abduct thigh

20

gluteus medius

abducts and medially rotates thigh; steadies pelvis

21

erector spinae

extend and bend the vertebral column laterally

22

diaphragm

prime mover of inspiration flattens on contraction

23

quadriceps group

extends knee and flexes thigh at hip. steadies knee

24

Sternocleidomastoid

flexion of neck forward, rotate head toward shoulder on opposite side
