Cellular Respiration & Fermentation
What is the formula for Cellular Respiration?
6O2 + C6H12O6 ->->-> 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy
What is the process called that:
*releases energy from food when oxygen is present
*gives off carbon dioxide, water and energy
Cellular Respiration
Where do organisms get the energy they need?
From FOOD
Is the energy stored in food released quickly or slowly?
SLOWLY...if it was given off all at once most of the energy would be lost as light and heat.
What are the 3 stages of Cellular Respiration called?
*Glycolysis
*Krebs Cycle
*Electron Transport Chain
What is Glycolysis?
*The 1st stage (or set of reactions)of cellular respiration.
*a molecule of glucose is broken into 2 molecules of pyruvic acid.
*Energy is given off
*Makes 4 ATP
What is NAD?
An electron carrier involved in glycolysis.
What is the Krebs Cycle?
*2nd stage of cellular respiration
*pyruvic acid is broken down into carbon dioxide and hydrogen.
*Makes 1 ATP (by each turn)
What is the Electron Transport Chain?
*3rd stage of cellular respiration
*uses high-energy electrons carried by NADH &FADH2, to change ADP to ATP.
*ex: provides most of the energy used by atheletes during cellular respiration.
In what cell organelle does the Krebs Cycle take place?
Mitochondrion
What is this an image of?
Cellular Respiration
How many ATP molecules are made by the breaking down of glucose in cellular reaspiration?
36 ATP/molecule of glucose
What is Fermentation?
*Process in which cells release energy when oxygen is NOT present.
*Cells change NADH to NAD+
Alcoholic Fermentation
*used by yeast and a few other microorganisms
formula:Pyruvic acid + NADH --> Alcohol + CO2 + NAD
*used to make alcohol
*causes bread dough to rise
*gives off CO2
Lactic Acid Fermentation
formula:Pyruvic acid + NADH --> Lactic acid + NAD+
*does NOT give off CO2
How do organisms generate energy when oxygen is NOT available?
When Oxygen(O2)is not present fermentation releases energy from food molecules by making ATP.
In your body, what are the 3 main sources of ATP?
*ATP already in the muscles
*ATP made by lactic acid fermentation
*ATP made by cellular respiration
Photosynthesis
*Produces food molecules
*Produces Oxygen(O2)
*Takes carbon Dioxide (CO2) from the air
Cellular Respiration
*Puts Carbon Dioxide back into the air
*Uses Oxygen(O2) to get energy from food
Aerobic Respiration
*** Needs Oxygen (O2)
(think exercising)
Anaerobic Respiration
***does NOT need Oxygern (O2)
(think yeast)
