a surprising and previously unknown fact, especially one that is made known in a dramatic way.
strychnine
a bitter and highly poisonous compound obtained from nux vomica and related plants. An alkaloid, it has occasionally been used as a stimulant.
quivering
trembling or shaking with a slight rapid motion.
spigot
a small peg or plug, especially for insertion into the vent of a cask. a faucet.
quills
any of the main wing or tail feathers of a bird. The hollow sharp spines of a porcupine, hedgehog, or other spiny mammal.

a duplicating machine which produces copies from a stencil, now superseded by the photocopier.
