Hamartia
The characters "fatal flaw" that may lead to their downfall.
Nemesis
A person or force working against the protagonist
Peripeteia
A reversal of fortune.
Anagnorisis
A moment of insight\wisdom just before their doom.
Catharsis
A feeling of cleansing at the end of a play.
Slavery
Forcing black people to work, largely on southern plantations leading to racism.
Southern Gentleman
Expected to be rich, courteous and chivalrous towards ladies.
Southern Belle
The southern belle was an upper class woman who expected men to treat
them
with courtesy, would flirt harmlessly, and present a
glamorous yet virginal demeanour.
Antebellum
The time before a war, especially the American Civil War.
Postbellum
The time after a war, especially the American Civil War
Southern gothic
An artistic genre that combines gothic elements with elements of the American South.
New America
America after the war when the southern plantations lost their power, woman had more of an accepted role in society, and industrialisation and immigration started.
Plastic Theatre
Plastic theatre is the use of props, noises, and stage directions
to
show a parallel with the characters’ state of mind on stage.
Migrant
A person who moves from one country or place to another.
Plantation
An estate on which crops are grown, often cotton.
