Unit 3 Vocabulary
Cell
Smallest functional and structural unit of all living organisms
Organism
Any living thing
Nucleus
Membrane bound organelle that contains DNA
Organelle
A small body in a cell's cytoplasm that is specialized to perform a specific function.
Cytoplasm
The region enclosed by the cell membrane that includes the fluid and all of the organelles
Cell Membrane
A protective layer that covers a cell’s surface, acts as a barrier, and controls what comes in and out
Prokaryote
A single celled organism that does not have a nucleus or membrane bound organelles. DNA is located in the cytoplasm.
Eukaryote
An organism made up of cells that contain their DNA in a nucleus
Lipid
A fat molecule that helps store energy
Protein
A molecule made up of smaller molecules called amino acids that help build and repair body structures.
Carbohydrates
Molecules that include sugars, starches, and fiber which are a good source of energy.
Nucleic Acid
A molecule that carries information in cells.
Phospholipid
A lipid that contains phosphorus and helps form the cell membrane.
Cytoskeleton
A network of protein filaments that gives shape support to cells
Mitochondra
Where cellular respiration occurs in an organelle to create energy
Ribosome
Organelle that makes proteins by putting together chains of amino acids using DNA instructions.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Assists in the production, processing, and transport of proteins and the production of lipids.
Golgi Complex
Membrane bound organelle that packages and distributes materials
Cell Wall
Rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane to provide support and protection to a cell.
Vacuole
A fluid-filled vesicle found in cells of most animals, plants, and fungi
Chloroplasts
Organelle where photosynthesis takes place.
Lysosome
Organelle that contains digestive enzymes, which break down worn-out or damaged, waste materials, and foreign invaders in the cell.
