What was Lincoln's Ten Percent Plan?
he wanted to bring back the nation together so we wanted to pardon the confederates
How did the Radical Republicans react to the confederates?
They wanted harsher punishment
What was the Wade-Davis Bill and did it get accepted?
It was a response to the ten percent plan by Lincoln, and it promised the confederates to show loyalty / it wasn't accepted, pocket-veto
Andrew Johnson, who is he?
He was from the South but supported the Union --> Lincoln wanted him as vice
How did Andrew Johnson's plan differ from Lincoln?
He was more lenient and said that most confederates would be pardoned / he was againist aristocracy(wealthy planters)
What was the result of Andrew Jackson's plan?
Many confederates could return to their seats ex) Alexander Stephes
What was the black codes?
It was a way to limit African American rights and maintain white supremacy.
Vagrancy / denied rights to own lands, marry, serve on juries
What was the vagrancy law?
People considered unemployment as something that's going againist the law and made them to a job which was essentially replicated slavery
What was the Freedman's Bureau?
It was something that was provided to the African Americans to help them adjust from slavery --> freedman. It provided education.
What was the special field order no15?
It provided African Americans with forty acres of land and a mule
What was the Civil Rights Act of 1866?
It promised blacks rights as a citizen, but still no voting rights
What did the Fourteenth Ammendement go againist?
1) the dred scotts case that blacks are property
2) states that did not accept this had less representatives (congressional representation)
What was Johnson's plan for democrats?
He wanted more of them in the congress but his plan failed. He was way too aggressive --> republicans were more popular (75%)
What was the Reconstruction Act of 1867?
Confederates were divided into five districts with military leaders and they had to agree to the fourteenth ammendment
What was the fifteenth Ammendment?
It gave blacks voting rights

John Roy Lynch, Bruce K. Blanche, Hiram Revels
What were Sharecroppers and Tenant Farmers?
blacks wanted security and land to live --> work in the whites land and harvest food --> most of it taken away by whites --> poor --> have to work more
