Ancient Greece notes
Mountains
They had fresh water from the melted ice and snow. The water helped plants grow for sheep and goats to eat. The mountain acted like a barrier so no one could enter their kingdom easily.
Coastlines
The coastal waterways supplied fish and waterfowl for the ancient Greeks to eat. They had to use the sea for transport and it was easy to trade. Deal natural harbors and only a few patches of farming areas.
Seas
Seas are used for food,movement/trading and isolation. There is the Crete sea, Ionian sea, Mediterranean sea and the Aegean sea.
Plains
There is flat land which is good for farming and there is not a ton of flat land which leads to more trades because everyone wants crops.
How did the geography of Greece influence its people?
The people of Greece transport by water instead of climbing a mountain. Mountains created isolation for the people to have space.People in Greece raised goats because goats can walk by mountains so they get milk from goats and they eat sheep/lambs,Greece grows grapes and olives. The grapes are for wine and olives for oil or olive oil. They have a very limited farm land.
How did the geography of Greece affect the development of its societies?
Greece used the sea to trade and transportation.Mycena started a war with Troy because prince Pairs took King Menelaus's wife/Hella.
What were the other important city-states in ancient Greece?
There are several powerful city states like Mycenae,Athens,
Sparta and Thebes.Athens and Sparta became powerful because of geographic isolation and they created their own civilizations and government.Corinth is the main trader.Thebes kill anyone to get what they want.
Monarchy
1 person rules. King or queen rules. You have to be born into royalty.A normal person has no power. The king or queen chooses their rights.
Oligarchy
A few people rule. The small group of leaders rule. Whoever has a lot of wealth and by force rules. Normal people have no power. The small group of leaders makes the rules.
Tyranny

Democracy
The people choose who rules. Citizens make the rules. You are born in a state of Democracy or pass a test to live in that state. Normal people have all the power. The people choose who becomes the leader and rules.
Athens
Direct democracy.
They lived near seas so they were good at fishing and they used the seas as a parking lot and transportation.
Boys learned how to read, write, poetry and instruments.Girls learned how to run a house gold for family, cooking and making clothing.
Aegean sea so they had fish and transportation.
Men voted and went to school. Women were not able to vote but they cook and make sure the household is good.
Located near the Aegean Sea, with very little farm land surrounding the area so they have used the ocean.
Sparta
Sparta’s form of government is an Oligarchy.
Sparta were very strong in the military. They probably were strong swimmers and fishers because they were by a body of water.
All male citizens could be educated and when they are 7 they learned how to fight but when they are 20 they are in the army and fighting. Women go to school to become strong fighters so when the men are away they can fight back.
They had water around them for food and water so they could eat fish or other sea life and they could grow crops with water and they could drink the water.Slaves farmed with all the farmland.
Women and men both were fighters while slaves just farm.
Located on the Greek peninsula south of Athens, in the middle of Peloponnesus, a rich farmland.
Government
The Athenians invented direct democracy. Citizens vote directly on governmental issues
We still use this form of government today in our local government (City government)
Socrates
Socrates was a philosopher and teacher. He taught by debating and asking questions.
The Socrates method wants you to make the student think more about their decision.
Plato & The Republic
We know a lot about Socrates because of Plato because he wrote a lot about his teacher Socrates.Plato wrote the republic.
Now because of Plato writing the republic keeps our government intact because we would have no rules and if people did not do their jobs our government would be garbage.
Aristotle
Aristotle said people should have logical thinking not some kind of superstitions.
Aristotle kind of generated the thought of the scientific method.
Math
Theorem=a2+b2=c2 and angles and lines.
Measuring things like a TV and seeing if you really got what you paid for and we can now take geometry.
Science and engineering
He created pulleys to pull very heavy items.
We use things similar like this like pulleys, wheel barrels and wheelchair ramps etc.
Science - Medical
Hippocrates studied diseases and made cures.
People in the medical field take an oath and now we have doctors.
Architecture
Greek broke into 3 groups called Doric,Ionic and Corinthian. They liked balanced structures.
We use columns and pediments even today columns are like pillars and hold structures up.Any important structures have Greece symbols because it is our way to say thank you.
Art
They made statues of gods, goddesses and famous people to remember them and represent them.
We create the status of people that are famous to remember them.
Greek Myths
They used gods and goddesses to explain what was going on.
We use many expressions of their gods and goddesses.
Sports
They used sports like the olympic sports such as running, wrestling, javelin throwing and jumping etc.
We have the Olympics but everyone can participate in these sports.
Literature - Homer
Homer was the most famous poetry writer of Greece and he wrote many famous poems that Greeks love such as the Iliad and the Odyssey.
We learn about Odyssey and Iliad in high school. The Iliad and Odyssey have a lot of inspiration.
History
Herodotus and Thucydides were the first people to start recording history that has been witnessed.
In school we are still learning about all kinds of different history topics.
Drama
Greece started the idea of a play. Some are funny, some are sad, there are a bunch of different genres.
We still to this day watch plays at theaters and now we have movies which are pretty much plays played on television.
Language
One of the oldest branches of the Indo-European languages.
Many English words were taken from Greek like poem, philosophy and Democracy/demos and kratos.
R.L.A.H Athenian Democracy - Final Claim
Ancient Athens was truly not democratic.
Evidence #1 (Properly cited from sources)
In the text Wealthy hellas it says there are 12% men in the population. (Josiah Ober)
Justification #1 (Why does this evidence support your claim)
This means they say everyone can vote but only men/boys 18 or over can vote. That means 88% of the population can not vote that includes women, children, metric, and slaves. Why would they call it democratic if only 12% can vote.
Evidence #2 (Properly cited from sources)
The article “Athens a Democracy” says, “First, democracy is the rule of the whole of the people, excluding minors and maniacs only. Demokratia was ruled by male citizens only, excluding women, free foreigners and slaves.” (Mogens Hansen)
Justification #2 (Why does this evidence support your claim)
This shows that Demokratia was only ruled by male citizens which is once again not every one also excluding minors, maniacs, women, free foreigners and slaves.
Evidence #3 (Properly cited from sources)
The text “Ostracized in Athens” It says, “There may be pitfalls ... .One batch of 190 ostraca found in Athenas, all with the name of Themistocles….turned out to be all written by only 13 individuals…. The other danger is that if a leading statesman is powerful enough and has the votes, ostracism is a great way to eliminate a weaker but annoying rival.”
Justification #3 (Why does this evidence support your claim)
This means there is no way Athena's can be a democracy if the whole time only 13 men were voting instead of everyone. They are trying to eliminate an annoying member but everyone should be able to vote on the clay pieces to vote someone out which is illegal in a democracy
Conclusion (State why ALL your evidence supports your claim)
All in all Athens is not a democracy because only men can vote.and one time they were trying to eliminate an annoying member but everyone should be able to vote on the clay pieces and vote for someone not just 13 people and that is why Athens is not an example of a democracy.
