Instructions for Side by Side Printing
  1. Print the notecards
  2. Fold each page in half along the solid vertical line
  3. Cut out the notecards by cutting along each horizontal dotted line
  4. Optional: Glue, tape or staple the ends of each notecard together
  1. Verify Front of pages is selected for Viewing and print the front of the notecards
  2. Select Back of pages for Viewing and print the back of the notecards
NOTE: Since the back of the pages are printed in reverse order (last page is printed first), keep the pages in the same order as they were after Step 1. Also, be sure to feed the pages in the same direction as you did in Step 1.
  3. Cut out the notecards by cutting along each horizontal and vertical dotted line

ch 8 bio study module

front 1

Why are C4 plants more suited to hot climates than C3 plants?

back 1

Unlike C3 plants, they keep fixing carbon dioxide even when the concentration of carbon dioxide in the leaf is low.

front 2

During photosynthesis in a eukaryotic cell, an electrochemical gradient is formed across the ___________.

back 2

thylakoid membrane

front 3

You could distinguish a granum from a crista because the granum, but not the crista, would __________.

back 3

have photosynthetic pigments

front 4

The Calvin cycle occurs in the __________.

back 4

stroma

front 5

Which of the following sequences correctly represents the flow of electrons during photosynthesis?

back 5

H2O → NADPH → Calvin cycle

front 6

During photosynthesis, an electron transport chain transports __________.

back 6

electrons from photosystem II to photosystem I

front 7

In mechanism, photophosphorylation is most similar to __________.

back 7

oxidative phosphorylation in cellular respiration

front 8

In photosynthesis, plants use carbon from __________ to make sugar and other organic molecules.

back 8

carbon dioxide

front 9

Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P) is produced in the stroma of chloroplasts. Which of the following statements about this compound is most true?

back 9

  • It is produced from glucose during glycolysis.
  • It is a three-carbon sugar.
  • All of the listed responses are correct.
  • For every three molecules of CO2, six molecules of G3P are formed but only one molecule exits the cycle to be used by the plant cell.
  • For every three molecules of CO2, six molecules of G3P are formed but five molecules must be recycled to regenerate three molecules of RuBP.

front 10

A photon of which of these colors of light would carry the most energy?

back 10

Blue

front 11

Which of the following sequences correctly represents the flow of electrons during photosynthesis?

back 11

Release of oxygen

front 12

The reactions of the Calvin cycle are not directly dependent on light, but they usually do not occur at night. Why?

back 12

The Calvin cycle requires products only produced when the photosystems are illuminated.

front 13

Chlorophyll molecules are in which part of the chloroplast?

back 13

Thylakoid membranes

front 14

What is the role of NADP+ in photosynthesis?

back 14

It is reduced and then carries electrons to the Calvin cycle

front 15

When chloroplast pigments absorb light, __________.

back 15

their electrons become excited

front 16

Which of the following statements correctly describes the relationship between the light reactions and the Calvin cycle?

back 16

The light reactions produce ATP and NADPH, both of which are used in the Calvin cycle.

front 17

The source of the oxygen produced by photosynthesis has been identified through experiments using radioactive tracers. The oxygen comes from __________.

back 17

water

front 18

Which of the following statements is a correct distinction between autotrophs and heterotrophs?

back 18

Autotrophs, but not heterotrophs, can nourish themselves beginning with CO2and other nutrients that are inorganic.

front 19

Rubisco is __________.

back 19

the enzyme in C3 plants that first captures CO2 to begin the Calvin cycle

front 20

The most important role of pigments in photosynthesis is to __________.

back 20

capture light energy

front 21

What portion of the electromagnetic spectrum is most absorbed by the chlorophyll pigments in the thylakoid membranes?

back 21

Blue-violet and red light

front 22

Which process is most directly driven by light energy?

back 22

Removal of electrons from chlorophyll molecules

front 23

How does carbon dioxide enter the leaf?

back 23

Through the stomata

front 24

Where do the electrons entering photosystem II come from?

back 24

Water

front 25

How is photosynthesis similar in C4 plants and CAM plants?

back 25

Rubisco in not the enzyme that catalyzes the initial fixation of carbon.
