MicroBiology(Shegilla)

front 1

What disease do Shigella cause?

back 1

  • Bacillary dysentery(members of its family)
  • Shigellosis
  • renal Failure, ischemia and hemorrhagic colitis(by shiga toxin)
  • Ulceration
  • rarely bacteriemia(bacteria entering the blood stream) or sepsis(condition that happens when the body’s immune system has an extreme response to an infection)

front 2

What family does the genus Shigella belong to?why?

back 2

Enterobacteriaceae, bc they have similar DNA sequence(DNA homolgy)

front 3

With which genera has Shigella traditionally been grouped?

back 3

  • Salmonella
  • Yersinia

front 4

They consider Shegilla a sub species of what?

back 4

Escherichia

front 5

In which populations are dysentery outbreaks commonly associated?

back 5

  • Families
  • Cruise ships
  • Mental hospitals
  • Day-care facilities
  • Prisoners

front 6

How many Shigella organisms are needed to cause disease?

back 6

Ingestion of as few as 100 - 200 organisms.

front 7

How long can Shigellae survive in milk, eggs, cheese, or shrimps?

back 7

Up to 30 days.

front 8

What percentage of shigellosis infections occur in children under 15 years?

back 8

70% of infections.

front 9

What do Shegilla needs to have in order to invade host cells

back 9

A 220-kb plasmid encoding 4 proteins: IpaA, IpaB, IpaC, IpaD.

front 10

What role does IpaD play in Shigella infection?

back 10

IpaD acts as an adhesion allowing phagocytosis.

front 11

Where is the host cell receptor for IpaD expressed?

back 11

On the basolateral pole(interior side of abdomen) of enterocytes(epithelial lining of intestine)

front 12

What is Shiga neurotoxin identical to? who produces it?

back 12

Verotoxin-1 produced by enterohemorrhagic E. coli strains of E.coli

front 13

What are the dysentery like diseases that resemble that dysentery due to shigella

back 13

  • Enteroinvasive E. coli
  • Campylobacter jejuni
  • parasite Entamoeba histolytica.
