Instructions for Side by Side Printing
  1. Print the notecards
  2. Fold each page in half along the solid vertical line
  3. Cut out the notecards by cutting along each horizontal dotted line
  4. Optional: Glue, tape or staple the ends of each notecard together
  1. Verify Front of pages is selected for Viewing and print the front of the notecards
  2. Select Back of pages for Viewing and print the back of the notecards
NOTE: Since the back of the pages are printed in reverse order (last page is printed first), keep the pages in the same order as they were after Step 1. Also, be sure to feed the pages in the same direction as you did in Step 1.
  3. Cut out the notecards by cutting along each horizontal and vertical dotted line

front 1

Microorganisms visible to the naked eye:

back 1

Fungi and Algae

front 2

Why is microbiology important?

back 2

1. Microbes are the oldest forms of life

2 Largest mass of any living material on Earth

3. Carry out major processes for biogeochemical cycles

4. Can live in places unsuitable for other organisms

5. Other life forms need microbes to survive

front 3

All cells have the following in common:

back 3

1. Cytoplasmic membrane.

2. Cytoplasm

3. Ribosome.

front 4

Genome is:

back 4

a cells full complement of genes

front 5

Chromosome is:

back 5

a genetic element carrying genes essential to cellular function.

front 6

Plasmid is :

back 6

a piece of DNA that carry's non-essential genes

front 7

Characteristics of Eukaryotes:

back 7

1. Membrane-bound nucleus.

2. Membrane-bound organelle

3. Complex internal organization.

4. Divison by mitosis and meiosis.

Characteristics of prokaryotes:

back 15

1. No membrane-bound nucleus.

2. Generally smaller ( approx 1 um diameter)

3. Simple internal structure.

4. Divides by binary fission ( asexual reproduction, parent cell divides into two daughter cells)

5. Most are unicellular.

front 16

Is Bacteria a eukaryote or a prokaryote?

back 16

prokaryote.

front 17

Bacteria are:

back 17

1. Genetically diverse.

3.Includes both pathogens and non-pathogens.

front 18

Is an Archae a eukaryote or prokaryote?

back 18

prokaryote.

front 19

Archae are:

back 19

1. Genetically and biochemically different from bacteria.

2. Also have diverse metabolism.
