DNA Mutations

front 1

Which type of mutation occurs only in reproductive cells?

back 1

germline mutation

front 2

Which type of mutation occurs only in gametes?

back 2

germline mutation

front 3

Which is a point mutation and not a frameshift mutation?

back 3

Silent

front 4

A mutagen is

back 4

an agent that causes a mutation in DNA.

front 5

Which type of mutation always produces a stop codon?

back 5

Nonsense

front 6

A point mutation changes the DNA sequence CGA to CGT, but the same protein is still produced. Which point mutation occurred?

back 6

Silent

front 7

The DNA sequence reads ACGTTCATT before a mutation occurs. After the mutation, the DNA sequence reads ATCGTTCATT. Which type of mutation occurred?

back 7

Insertion

front 8

Ji wants to write an example of a frameshift mutation using the following sentence: THE CAT SAW THE RAT. Which sentence best shows a frameshift mutation?

back 8

THC ATS AWT HER AT.

front 9

Many different types of mutations can occur within the body. Sickle cell anemia is a disease that occurs when a mutation in a base pair of the hemoglobin beta gene causes a single replacement of the amino acid glutamic acid by the amino acid valine. As a result of this mutation, the individual’s blood cells take on a sickle shape under certain conditions and form clusters that can block blood vessels and cause organ damage

Which type of mutation causes sickle cell anemia?

back 9

Missense

front 10

Based on scientific research, which statement best describes mutations?

back 10

Mutations are rare occurrences.

front 11

Many different types of mutations can occur within the body. Tay-Sachs disease is a deadly disorder that is caused by a missing codon in the gene coding for production of the hex A enzyme in the body. Which type of mutation is responsible for causing Tay-Sachs disease?

back 11

Deletion

front 12

Which is considered a chemical mutagen?

back 12

Tobacco

front 13

A scientist thinks that a certain chemical is a mutagen. She exposes plant cells to a large amount of this chemical in the laboratory.

Which statement best provides evidence that the substance is a mutagen?

back 13

The cells change after being exposed to the chemical, and this change is passed to the next generation of cells

front 14

Which statement is scientifically based?

back 14

Mutations rarely occur.

front 15

Which best describes genetic mutations?

back 15

Some inherited genetic mutations can be good for the offspring.

front 16

Which best describes somatic mutations?

back 16

They can cause different kinds of cancer.
