Hind-brain
"automatic survival functions"
contains brain-stem.
Brainstem
Directs essential survival functions. Ex: breathing, sleeping, alertness, coordination, and balance.
Medulla
Brain stems base. Controls heartbeat and breathing ;automatic functions.
Pons
Above medulla. Helps coordinate movements and control sleep, "limb body/paralysis."
Thalamus
A top of brain stem(medulla+pons." brains sensory control center. Directs messages to sensory receiving areas(except smell), transmits replies to cerebellum and medulla. "switch board operator"
Recticular Formation
Nerve network that travels through the brain-stem into the thalamus. Filters information, plays a role in alertness.
Cerebellum
Rear of the brain-stem. processing sensor input, coordinating movement output and balance, and enabling procedural learning.
if injured: difficulty in walking and keeping balance.
