Density
The ratio of an object’s mass to its volume. It is a measure of how tightly packed the matter is.
Colloid
A heterogeneous mixture with particle that cannot be easily separated
Homogeneous mixture
A mixture that has uniform appearance and properties throughout but can be made of multiple elements mixed together (such as a metal alloy), multiple compounds and elements mixed together (such as air), or multiple compounds mixed together (such as a solution of sugar in water)
Heterogeneous mixture
A mixture that is clearly not uniform throughout and can be made of multiple compounds, multiple elements, or a combination of compounds and elements mixture – a substance that is made by mixing two or more parts, either compounds or elements, that do not chemically combine
Pure substance
A substance that consists of only one specific element or compound throughout
Suspension
A heterogenous mixture with particles that can be easily separated
Polar compounds
Compounds with a positive or negative (polar) charge
Nonpolar compounds
Compounds with molecules that do not have a polar charge
Solute
A substance that is dissolved in a solvent
Solution
A mixture made up of a solvent and a solute
Solvent
A substance that dissolves another substance
